Getting A Good’s Night Sleep

Sleep is just as important as a good diet in maintaining one’s health. Poor sleep will contribute to reduced stamina and mental alertness but also will weaken the immune system. This is important no matter what age, young, middle age, elderly. Sleep deprivation is something to be avoided at all costs. It is time to take control of your health; check out this brief article on Mercola.com

Educating Our Youth -Impact for our future

Making our youth a priority should be on the minds of all of us no matter where you live. Study after study points to the importance of education and it needs to start early and be diverse. A brief article which highlights the impact to the US due to its poor record on bring science education to our youth is in USA Today.

All of us can make a difference in the  lives of all of our youths. It’s never too late to start.

The War on Drug Resistance

Who knew the problem of drug resistant bacteria (DRB) would be a significant challenge in more than a third of the US states in the year 2010. Well it has been discussed in countless medical school classes,… as I think about my days at UCSF School of Medicine  I remember hearing professors warn us about this potential threat. And yes it is here in full force. The problem is not just affecting us in the US as outlined in an article by USA Today

This is a global problem and everyone is at risk. The risk of drug resistant bacteria is why I don’t liberally prescribe antibiotics for patients presenting with the common cold no matter how much they beg or plead. It is the unrestricted use of antibiotics that has resulted in this potential catastrophic problem in  this decade, and the even scarier thing is that drug resistant bacteria is not going away anytime soon.

Be warned, ….  Patients stop asking your health care provider for antibiotics to help you get better. Colleagues, revise your mode of dispensing prescriptions for antibiotics because we have caused this problem and everyone of us has to be on guard…..

Can we overcome poverty and social class stigma?

Urban blight affects our cities and communities. Getting people working and motivated to take care of their own is vital in rejuvenating our urban communities. An interesting NY Times article looks at how business is erasing the traditional caste system in India. Can building business work in America?  Why not try? What can motivate us to improve our lives?

Where do you get your meals?

For almost 50% of our children in school across the country are getting their meals at school. It is important that we advocate for nutritious foods at all of our schools. Including those in the urban areas. A recent  USA Today article provides a look at how hunger is being helped by food program in our schools.

Stand up for our youth! Could the epidemic of childhood obesity be linked to the food programs in our schools,…. hmmmm! Food for thought….

A washingtonpost.com Haitian Elderly Continue to Struggle

A most desperate struggle in Haiti

By William Booth
PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI — It was always hard to be old in Haiti, but after the earthquake, to be old and poor feels like a curse, say those who are both.

My Take:

While the immediate shock of this major earthquake has subsided the pain continues. Much help is desperately needed and the elderly are suffering even more. Don’t forget about the Haitian people.

Lessons at Indian Hospital About Births
By DENISE GRADY
A small, underfunded hospital in Arizona, with about 500 births a year, is outperforming richer institutions when it comes to keeping Caesarean rates down.

My Take:

Technology has improved our lives but sometimes it may not be for the best. In the field of obstetrics many physician treat the technology instead of the patient. Giving women more time to labor instead of rushing to a cesarean section may not always be prudent especially if the baby is doing well and there are no other complications.
